Former Rep. Matt Gaetz was shown an informal whip count shortly before he announced his withdrawal as Donald Trump's attorney general-designate, a source familiar with the process told The Post.

The tally showed the Floridian had "no path to confirmation," the source added.

A second source said it was Gaetz's decision to withdraw his name, not Trump's.

What a genius 5D chess move by Trump...in one stroke he managed to get a likely pedophile out of Congress and still keep that man on his good side, AND he made his true choice for AG look more palatable as a result. Trump is happy because he gets the AG he actually wanted, Gaetz is happy because he was given an exit strategy for his ethics troubles, and the Senate is happy that they got to publicly flex some muscle and not look like laptops.
