I threw Norway up mainly because of Jergul, but honestly I was a bit surprised all those countries beat the US who is tied with Malaysia at for debt/GDP ratio.

The entire Western world has become hopelessly addicted to debt. Especially now that we're solidly in an era of slow population/production growth across the First World.

'Hopelessly addicted' is a funny way to put it, when people are programmed to accumulate debt and the vast majority have no alternative.

And frankly, house hold debt is a pretty shitty metric, as it assumes a mortgage is any different than a lease. Rent should be calculated as a debt.

It is interesting to see a 3rd world country so high up as on place 13 on that list among all the 1st world nations.

Seems useless as a metric of living standard without providing much greater detail. F. ex, Scandinavia has younger first time home owners than the USA, kids who leave home earlier and create new households who havent started to make higher wages yet but have invested in property with a future return. Also, the difference in type of debt is very significant. Student loans as an investment to get a good job are a completely different story than consumer debt to pay for a new wardrobe. etc etc etc

Pakistan being so low hardly means theyre doing better. It probably just means fewer people getting university education, owning homes etc etc

Not surprisingly, quality of life is very similar to the debt/GDP ratio
