I hope traffic citations get taken up as well. A $50 ticket can cost you 150-225 in PA bynthe time you pay to train everything from meter maids to k9 units etc.

They should eliminate parking tickets and just legalize keying in the event a car is illegally parked. BOOM, done.

I would think that a single ticket would get the message across to most people. But of course you always have a certain few who will never get the message. We called them frequent flyers when I worked at the jail.

Parking tickets and tickets in general should be based on your income. Otherwise they make no sense.

Nimatzo, isn't that how they levy fines in some Scandinavian countries for speeding?

All of them have day-fines based on your income, but only Finland has this for speeding, I think, maybe Norway and Denmark. Sweden does not, but all other crimes that can get you a fine is based on income.

That system becomes a problem when you've got homeless panhandlers driving Veyrons at 300 kph.

Habebe is wrong again. The district court said that the late fee for failing to pay your parking ticket on time was unconstitutional, because it was excessive(parking ticket was $63, late fee was $181).

Dakyron, each time someone ignores one of these things it generates a lot of paper work. Then the court issues a warrant which entails a police officer of one sort or another having to attempt to find the miscreant. So yep $181 is cheap.

I wasn't agree or disagreeing with the ruling, just correcting habebe's nonsense.

Dayton is being nitpicky, and wrong.

Yes the late fee was deemed excessive.and this is all that will be reviewed from this it also puts precedent on the fact that all parking fines must comply with the eighth.

Only because LA conceded this point since the judge is no Gorsuch.

"Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Wednesday that parking tickets and fees must comply with the Eighth Amendment’s ban on “excessive fines.”

I also take as much artistic license as I please with my thread titles see my Ivanka who ethics thread.

I also side with the attorney that they raised costs year to year with put just* cause. The judge however did not.

"generates a lot of paper work."

Lol @ government stooges.

Imagine reissuing a ticket with an additional late fee and/or FTA being "a lot of paperwork", in excess of $181 worth of work.

Shortly after I moved to Denver I got a parking ticket. I still had my old mailing address as I hadn't updated everything yet. They sent a reminder to pay the ticket to my old address. I had my parents checking my mail for me at that address (small town that doesn't deliver mail you have to go to the post office to get it) and my mom decided to do me a favor and sent in payment for the ticket. I had gone to pay the ticket in person so it got paid twice.
When I found out it was paid twice I went back to city hall and explained what happened. All the lady behind the counter could do was ask why would I pay it twice. No matter how I explained it she would ask but why did you pay it twice. It wasn't much to I let it go.
Twelve years later I got a check from the city of Denver for the price of the parking ticket plus interest.
That might be what got me on the road to thinking big government isn't a good idea for anything.

What you just described is stupid government. It doesn't matter how "big" or "small" it is, stupid government is always a problem.

And quite frankly, most of what the US has is stupid government, no matter who is holding the reins.

Uhm yea. I have paid stuff twice, twice. Once they returned my money at the end of the same year, the second time they called me 2 weeks after I paid the bill, the woman on the other end sounded like she was almost in distress, "what is this money, we can't have this money, you paid for it already last month."

Of course, this was in the 2000's they had figured out how to keep tabs by then, and kargen is probably talking about when he was young, back in the roaring 20's :P

Frowyn "Imagine reissuing a ticket with an additional late fee and/or FTA being "a lot of paperwork", in excess of $181 worth of work."

When you don't pay the ticket the court orders the clerk to write up the warrant and deal with the issuing of a new ticket which is then given to an officer of the court to collect, or it will sit on the books until you run afoul of the law again. They'll run a check on you and it will pop up. You may end up in jail because of you being identified as a scofflaw. Lot's of money will be spent bringing you to justice for your high crimes and misdemeanors. So yeah, there will be a lot of paper work generated.

Other than a cop actually following up on a warrant, that's like two instances of less than 15min of work.

"Someone missed their due date"

"Aight, tack on a late fee"

"Someone missed their court date"

"Aight, tack on a FTA and issue a warrant"

Whoaaaaa, that's a novel
