Does anyone else play or have played these games?

Basically you conquer China, strategy game.

The original was probably the most in depth NES game of all time, my uncle gave it to me as a kid cause he didn't know how to play, and once I showed him didn't habe interest to Do So... Tough to fimd friends that.would play too.

But I loved it, still do, he original had such a cool new.concept , great songs and visuals and was in depth enough to let you

Develop land for flood protection/ better harvest, form alliances with everything from gifting horses/gold to marriage.

The warfare is so broad for an NES game just more soldiers won't win, its takes into account terrain, food, gold, intelligence scores and wind direction for fire.Training level of troops, metal weapons etc.

Later games would introduce bribing off tribes.to.do.raids, sending ninjas to steal technology, naval ships, war machines, elephants and tricks like setting traps and rigging rock slides on enemies which can also effect morale.

I still prefer the old lay put and wish new concepts could be brpught in. 11 for PC was amazing, but for some reason no multiplayer which they've had since the NES/Amiga versions.

Or how about great text afventures like Zork? I would still play Dork. Kind of shocked it hasn't been ported yet.

I played some version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms a long time ago. I've played Zork more recently, but still quite a few years ago.

Your mention of Zork is interesting - have you read Ready Player One?

Omg! Im playing Dork right now, I foumd an app that reads text games, you have to download it separate but they have a depository built in so its easy.

I have seen bits and pieces of the movie. The book was probably better.

The newest ROTK game I played was 11. Great game. The PS2 ome was cool too.

I just killed a troll in the basement of the white house I broke into in Zork and took his axe...its been like 25 years simce I've played this.

The book and the movie are very different, but the movie does manage to maintain the overall spirit of the book through a lot of changes. Both have a lot of issues, but the book is worth a read if you enjoyed older games and like 80's pop culture and geek references.

The book's sequel is due out in late November, so now is the time to read it if you think there's any chance you might enjoy it.

As for games, I do have a lot of older games that I occasionally circle back to, but my time is limited enough that I don't get the chance too often.

I haven’t played Romance of the three Kingdoms.

But I’ve been watching some videos on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. That game looks AMAZING.

It has stuff like LIVE WEATHER and LIVE AIR TRAFFIC. And you can fly all over the world, over any city, to any airport!

But Flight Simulator 2020 won’t be coming to PS4 or Mac, right?

So if I want to play this game I have to buy a PC with the most expensive Graphic Card? Like a RTX 2080? Or buy a Xbox? That sucks. I don’t feel like paying thousands of money just for playing the game.

I’m gonna tweet and ask if they can release this game for Mac and PS4 also. Does Bill Gates have Twitter?

” Basically you conquer China, strategy game.”

If I want to conquer I just play Hearts of Iron.

Woo, I'll definitely check out the book.

Paramount, The PlayStation versioms of rotk are good, but the PC games are always better. I happen to have a nostalgic love for the NES original, but truth be told Ive never finished a game for the NES version....i have a saved game Ive dabbled back to I started like a year ago.

Id imagine the mac version is similar to the PC. All the phone versions are horrid and are not made by Koei. Koei has there Historical sim games down Pat.

Nobungas revenge looks good and is similar in feel, but thw problem is that it has too many options for an NES/SNES game so they squeeze in actions using pictures which I have nonidea wtf half of them are.

Genghis Kahn series is also similar.

They even had a US colonial game that was built around the same engine I think it was called Linerty or death but again it was too confusing to figure out what the oprioms were and I lost interest by the time I researched them.

An RTX 2080 is only the "ideal" setup. The recommended is much lower (GTX 970, which isn't that beefy these days).

Keep in mind that the 3000 series for Nvidia is likely arriving within the next few months, and rumors are that the new gpu's are significantly faster than the current line. So while an RTX 2080 will never be cheap, if the new line is as good as the rumors claim, older gpu prices will definitely drop.

I'll toss out an old late 80's/early 90's game that was awesome - Master of Monsters. You can still play it via emulator, of course.

Never heard of it.

Invokes thoughts of tecmos deception games. They came in in the late 90s for ps1.

Remember pre doom with Wolfenstein?

In some ways, but Tecmo's Deception was a different genre.

Master of Monsters was hex-based and turn-based, and really had no story whatsoever. Each game was a battle on a map between your chosen master (and the monsters it could summon) and those of your opponents - winner take all.

A current somewhat similar game might be Battle for Wesnoth, which is a fantastic game. It's actually better, save for the nostalgia. Wesnoth has stories, campaigns, set pieces, differing goals, troops that carry over, etc.

I do recall the Wolfenstein games, too. I never did much with the first two games, but got more into them once they became 3D first person shooters (Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny).

Honestly, though, nothing can match the outright insanity of some of the levels in the Serious Sam games. Those were straight chaos and ridiculously fun.

Huge fan of turn based strategy or tactics games. So master.of.monsters/ was both sound cool.

Later rotk battles are he's based. The original being square tiles. Sort of like 2 board games in one with 58 varying battle boards.

If you're a fan of those types of games, I have to assume you've played Final Fantasy Tactics. That is easily one of my all time favorite games.

Woo, Funny you mention that. I was going to mention it in my last post.

If you liked ff tactics , I would highly recommend Ff tactics advance if you havnt played it. It is more child oriented in story but SOLID gameplay.

It's actually the game that really got me into tactics games. Although you could argue ROTK and later civilization are tactics based as well but FF had more depth early on at least.

Later ROTK lets you, steal, cause chaos, rock slides, infiltrate, duel etc.

Honestly Id put ff tactics up there with FF7 and Mario RPG as in my top 5 rpg's of all time.

Another set of favorite style games is now that I think about it I guess the next generation after Zork.

Shadowgate/ The uninvited. I kust played the uninvited last year.for the first time but I grew up with shadowgate.Later on shadowgate 64 was great, the controls are wonky like all N64 games.

I never played Myst, but Ive always been intrigued by it. They have a cheap version on yoir phone but the, those games imho are best played with a small group brainstorming to figure out what to try next.

Shadowgate I definitely played, though I don't think I ever played Uninvited. I have good, though vague, memories of Shadowgate.

I worked through Myst and Riven close to their release dates. Myst is an amazing game and Riven is nearly as good, though if memory serves, there is a point in the game where puzzle difficulty takes a sudden and dramatic increase. I definitely suggest them both, though I would start with Myst since Riven gets brutal unless you're very good at noticing very minor things and deciphering the puzzles.

Since you like those types of games, you might try a series of mobile games (they may be available elsewhere by now, I'm not sure - maybe Steam?) called The Room. The mobile interface is well designed and effective, and the puzzles are reasonable for casual puzzle solvers. There is a hint system that apparently does a good job of nudging you forward without directly providing the solution.

Yeah I only found uninvited on my emulator while looking for shadowgate like games, it's was great though, there is a third one all made by the same people/same design called Deja vu which is about a deyective who wakes up not knowing his name ore where he is but it lacked the creepy appeal for me.

Apparently there is beyond Shadowgate game on PC.

I was shocked you heard of Deception. The only one Ive played was Kagero ( deception 2) for ps1. I had never played any game like it before, very unique and fun.

I played a pretty wide range of games back in the day, so I got a good sampling. Emulators (and some old game systems) have helped me check out (or revisit) more titles over the years.

And while I do enjoy modern games, there is also something appealing about early games. Nostalgia is definitely part of it, but there is also a sense that they represent a distilled essence of gaming without a lot of today's fluff. Sometimes that fluff is welcome, but other times it's nice to play something without it.

Specific kimds of fluff turn me off from new games.

1. Anything that lets you buy in game advantages, I'd rather just buy the game outright and let that rather than $ determine the outcome.

2. Overdone graphics, by this I mean for example ROTK/similar games for example and final fantasy games IMO put this huge emphasis on move graphics, its not good enough that they attacked someone or did a specific move of sorts but that there is this huge graphic explosion or like a mico movie clip where the character flies in the air and yadda yadda.... I like minor animations for these but there is a balance that needs to be struck between gameplay and flare or fluff.

3. RPGs like Final fantasy became more movie than game, Again IMO balance is key to a good game experience.

4. Some new games seem to overly reward me, like yay I got more materials and medals etc. For doing very little 2/3 of the game is me winning some random bonuses that makes them feel valueless.

Faxanadu for example I wish would just have a real 8 or 16 bit sequel and keep true to the game. N64 and PS1 games were often as awkward as puberty with wonky controls that don't seem to hold up to time as well as 8 and 16 bit games.

And while modern games have the controls more down Pat ( I love the black ops games online) im not sure how it would come put with modern styling.

Some games have faired better, dragonwarrior/quest has steadily progressed well.

Some games did great and just disappeared. Have you ever played LOLO? Id love for a re hatch of that little blue guy.

I never played the LOLO series of games, though the name is familiar.

And I agree, the overuse of movies can get annoying. It works for certain games, but in others it ends up feeling tacked on. I think it's an issue of asking "Can we...?" instead of "Should we...?"

A few other game suggestions:

Darkest Dungeon
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Dungeon of the Endless

All three are versions of roguelikes, with Tales of Maj'Eyal probably being the closest to a "pure" roguelike. Darkest Dungeon is a ridiculously brutal dungeon crawl and Dungeon of the Endless is an interesting combination of level exploration and dungeon defense.

Of course, if you don't enjoy roguelikes, those games probably won't appeal.

Im not opposed to RL games , wouldnt mind taking a look at them.

As for LOLO, it's a puzzle game, but rather unique. So the first game is a tower with 100 rooms/floors. Your a blue egg guy (Lolo) you have to collect all the hearts in a room and that will open a chest with ball in it that instantly kills all the enemies and unlocks the next room/floor.

There are different enemies and obstacles like water tiles, rocks, bushes. The enemies all kill you or block your progress in different ways and certain hearts will give you different things like an egg you can shoot at enemies to stop them or float them over water, hammer to break rocks or build a bridge over water.

The sequel is just more levels of the same , the third is the same except its set in like a Mario Bros 3 sort of overworked that lets you choose what towers you go to first.

You know what game Id like but almost doesn't exist? Survival island games.

Like your cast away on an island and you habe to collect raw materials and craft useful tools. There were two games like this a while ago that were ok, called virtual villagers. The problem is they were soooo lacking, but great concept.

Ive played a few where you an individual, not as good as a group of villagers for me.

Or like say you run a small colony like Jamestown from the perspective ofnthe actual colonists. Learn to farm, hunt, craft things befriend and spar with natives. That if done right would be a cool concept. The problem is they're mostly shitty games due to poor execution.

So this has become a lot of me rambling but whatever.

So still playing that year old original rotk game, and it just illustrated to me why it's sucha great game, especially for its time.

Strategy 8/10 will beat brawn. I had piece by piece cornered Yuan Shao into two territories that Were not connected, so I had him surrounded. However this also left him with like 11 generals, all maxed out with 200k soldiers and yet I beat him out with 2 generals with about 250k combined soldiers.

Now I had two strong generals, with well trained, very loyal and well armed soldiers, for the most part so did he.

His down fall was he had attacked a weekly defended territory of mine which on paper he should have taken easily. However I used fire to my advantage by forcing his troops to abandon there rice and swooped in to take it because I had also lured his back up defense general away chasing a weak but valuable general he wanted to kill.

Now this left him down 20k rice from 30k. 10k rice isn't a lot when your feeding an army of 1.25 million.

So I quickly attacked figuring worst case scenario Id lower his grain stocks and flee by sending I a well protected grain supply and defending its protector long enough until I starved them out. Starving soldiers won't fight long.

olong.or how if you notice your opponent has a dis loyal governor, I'll bribe them to join me and take the wntire province and generals under him as well. Now they often are not super loyal to me either so I quickly buy there loyalty with gold and items or send in a loyal subject to run things to guard myself from losing provinces that way next.

Later games let you choose viceroys for larger kingdoms and they let you direct them like say you chpose a quality officer like Zhou Yu as Cicero over 5 provinces you can say develop land to increase rice production or markets to increase tax revenue so that you can better supply the front line provinces with soldiers and or war machines, war machines have to be researched, rams being of low tech up to catapults and siege towers.

They also can learn tactics in and out of war. Spying is a great one, a shit load of in battle tactics but outside of battle you can learn persuasion which helps recruit better officers. You can hire befriend and supply tribes that won't take territory but they can pillage things like rice from an enemy making it easier to conquer or you can send ninjas to assassinate am officer but low chances of success, you can plant double agents to turn later in in a battle who can do anything from just fight along side you or open gates if they are in a castle or sabotage war machines etc.

Just incredibly rich and in depth for 35 year old games.

I guess what Ive always wanted was a good mix of Civ 4 and ROTK with a dash of Caesar IIIs economics.

Meaning I want ROTK with its im depth take on individual development which is no where to be seen in Civ. Its all about the cub on the whole. But I want more economic activity in ROTK. Like.civs abundance of resources other than just rice and gold.

I want to mine copper and stone and be able to trade it in ROTK. But notnjust raw materials. This is where Caesar 3 comes in. For example you could mine clay and shape it into pottery for more.profit. so much so, that you could even just buy extea.clay from elsewhere and just make $ off the manufacturing. Or olives into olive oil etc. I want a varied economy and varied weapons made from different resources and technologies.

Or how about Patrician. Truth be told I only ever got into Patrician 3.

It's rather nerdy as its technically considered a historical trading sim. But very in depth economics, a great deal of detail is placed on timing, place and especially the trip to sell your goods. How much can your ship(s) carry, weight will slow you down, getting the goods to specific ports. Plus ifnyou flood the market, the price drops if it's more scarce but demand stays high the price goes up.

Holy shit, Im almost done this game for the first time ever ( NES version) ive been playing a little here and there. Im.at the point where it's inevitable I'll win. I have like 52 teritories out of 56, its just a matter of killing Liu Zhang and maybe Ma Tang afterwards, im not sure how alliances work this late in the game.

Its over, I finally won and beat the game. Not a great finale, it's just a pic of me and 2 guys saying " Sun Ce now holds sway over all of China"

I kimd of dropped the ball by loading an earlier save file where I was heavily under prepared and saving over it by accident. But I pulped through with the win by fleeing one general to the empty province behind the battle so they could.not flee there and then surrounding them and burning them alive or catchung them when they fled since they had no where to go.
