The sebs want to cancel lord nelson.

http://met...-for-colonial-empire-13404717/

Internal documents from the museum, seen by the Telegraph, show that staff want to capitalise on the ‘momentum built up by the Black Lives Matter movement’ to make changes and address ‘aspects of slavery relating to the Royal Navy’.

They said that displays relating to Nelson could be subject to ‘wholesale changes’.

The collections team told the paper: ‘We are in the process of rolling out our new strategy and part of this is looking specifically at the issues raised by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Does it detract from history to note which side of abolition Nelson was on?

Given much of Nelson's navy was composed of what could be argued to be white slaves (press gang), theres some interesting views to take.

Is abolition anywhere near the most important aspect of Nelson's career? If not, why is it worthy of highlighting?

By all means, report on it in the history books, but treating the issue as important as Trafalgar isn't right.

Rugian:

Reducing Nelson to trafalgar is a bit shit isn't it?

I mean a standard part of Nelson is his marriage and affair with Lady Hamilton. Given the Navy's role in both the slave trade prior to abolition, and the slave patrols after abolition, and Nelson's political influence it all seems kinda relevant.

If you just want to reducce him to "the guy that won trafalgar", that's a highly reductionist view of history. Dates, kings, heros, battles: don't worry about the whys, motivation and character of these people.

There is no chance that his views on abolition would over-shadow trafalgar.

I think, really, you are just being a bit triggered. It's like you can't handle the fact that the slave trade was a thing.

I grew up in a super-liberal state: practically every year of my public education dealt with slavery and racism in some form or another. It's not a new topic for me.

Let's not pretend that any sort of objective analysis of Nelson's career is going on here. When the proponents of this proposal are invoking BLM to justify their stance, it's clear they're viewing this through extremely politicized lenses.

We can of course present our history in a way that includes slavery. We've done so for a long time now. What these activists are proposing though is reducing US & UK history to "THEY DID SLAVERY" and treating that as if it was the primary legacy of our cultures, to the exclusion of all our other accomplishments and trials.

Its just not true.

By all means, if Nelson was a hugely influential player in the abolition debate, highlight it. Otherwise, its trivial and does not deserve to overshadow everything else he did.

I'm not surprised - it's practically the defining feature of America. The institution of slavery shaped and continues to shape many of the exceptional features of the US.

The way you approach policing, the way you approach guns in society, the touch point for the civil war, etc. etc. etc.

"Let's not pretend that any sort of objective analysis of Nelson's career is going on here."

"THEY DID SLAVERY" - But Rugian, we did, and it's a bit fucking deal. Through the lens of our current values, it's got to rank as one of the greatest crimes in history, and contrary to the revisionist approach: *we knew it was morally objectionable at the time*, and had to create a whole set of elaborate rationales to justify it to our own societies at the time.

You got to accept these things. You claim this is reducing US & UK hjstory to "slavery", but this is like suggesting that somehow, you could look at Germany's history and airbrush out the NAZIs because to acknowledge that period "reduces" the sum total of German history to NAZIism.

In no way would anyone look at the way British history is taught and memorialised and say it has been reduced to the slave trade.

Quite the opposite. It's unhealthily focused on WWII, as if the entire sweep of British history is reduced to "we beat the NAZIs".

That's the bigger problem here; you can see how it distorts and shapes British attitudes to this day.

"Otherwise, its trivial and does not deserve to overshadow everything else he did."
LOL! Yeah, being on the wrong side of one of the most important issues of the day is irrelevant.

Consider this, if the abolition movement hadn't prevailed, Britain would likely have intervened militarily in the civil war on the side of the south in a far more decisive manner.

The whole shape of global history would be different.

The idea though, that acknowledging his position on this issue is somehow over shadowing everything else is just silly nonsense.

I think your bigger problem here is you are so sensitive and brittle in your identity that you see this as somehow threatening, and so you would just rather the whole thing wasn't discussed.

A few dozen people.

I know Sam, being a country bumpkin, doesn't have a good grasp on what a lot of people are. I mean this is probably the entire population of his nearest town.

So your response to the obvious inability of the Uk to do any of the things you thought you could, is to lie about crowd size and make more completely wrong and inane rants about country living.

Lol daft.

Enjoy your crowds, crime, and covid. I think ill climb the 5000 foot hill thats 10 minutes away. Or maybe a nice stroll through my friendly neighborhood, taking in the mountain views, after splitting some wood in the nice clean crisp fall mountain air.

Enjoy your city. More lockdowns for you.
