The most dampened OG since forever. It’s not even the right year, I totally missed the opening ceremony and I feel totally confused because it has gone 5 years since last time. The memories have faded I barely know what this event was all about. If I remember correctly the ancient greeks used to hold games to entertain their Persian overlord. At least this is what we were taught at the Tehran North Darius high school. Not to be confused with Tehran South or Tehran Central Darius high school.

TOKYO, July 25 (Reuters) - The German women's gymnastics team opted to wear full-body suits in qualifications at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday in a move they said was designed to promote freedom of choice and encourage women to wear what makes them feel comfortable.

German pentathlon coach disqualified after punching horse in competition

Sat, August 7, 2021

The German modern pentathlon coach was disqualified and won’t be part of the men’s individual final at the Tokyo Olympics after she hit a horse with her fist earlier in the Games.

Coach Kim Raisner, according to Reuters, hit a horse with her fist during Friday’s show jumping in Tokyo and urged a German rider to “really hit” the horse when it didn’t want to jump.

“We were all in agreement that the coach will not be at the competition on Saturday,” German Olympic team chief Alfons Hoermann said, via Reuters. “We also consider that an urgent review of the incident is necessary, especially in terms of animal protection, and that the national and international federations draw their conclusions.”

German coach hits horse that wouldn’t jump

Horses at the modern pentathlon are assigned at random, and riders get just 20 minutes to warm up with their horse ahead of competitions. German Annika Schleu held a 24-second lead entering the show jumping leg of the pentathlon, though Schleu’s horse, Saint Boy, was struggling during the warm up, per the report.

Schleu repeatedly grew frustrated as Saint Boy started refusing to jump and she cried out as time on the run expired, as her lead had completely vanished.

Raisner, however, urged Schleu to “really hit it, hit” the horse and even punched the horse once on the back of the leg. Schleu was seen hitting the horse multiple times, too. The whole exchange was seen and heard on live TV in Germany.

Schleu was one of six riders that didn’t finish the leg and was eliminated.

"Rules must change in such a way so that rider and horse are protected," Hoermann said, via Reuters. "The focus must be on the welfare of the animals and the fair competition for athletes."

That was kind of fucked up. I know they are suppose to pull their punches and kicks so that there is no full contact (been that way for a long time) but the guy that got knocked out was lunging forward when he got kicked.

Gold / athlete makes no sense when China didn't qualify for some team sports. Unless you want to give 1 gold medal to each athlete on the winning team (USA wins).

China is so bad at team sports that they didn't even win a single medal in a team sport, either. Not ONE. lmao

For size comparisons, I think Australia deserves some real recognition.

I think they are technically 3rd per capita (may have changed) but they were beat by the Mariana Islands and Fiji who have like 1 medal each and just have a tiny pop.

So hats off to OZ.

Also I'm not sure where TC gets 41, I've checked 2 different sites and China lost to the US in every medal count.

They did well in gold, but lost. They did far less well in silver and bronze.

CANZUK 1,436 athletes
155 medals

USA 613 athletes
113 medals

CANZUK
0.107 medals per athlete

USA
0.184 medals per athlete

USA earned 71% more medals per athlete.

Dominating CANZUK with ease.

Sweden won the Olympics. Sweden won the gold medal in all sports that matters:

Athletics – Men's discus throw

Athletics – Men's pole vault

Equestrian – Team jumping

No one is shocked that Sweden won an event that has men on a pole.

If you count beach volleyball there is eleven team sports. Then you have mens and womens teams so that adds to the total number of medals available for team sports.
China participated in 225 events. USA participated in 268 events. Something else to consider in all this. If you have at least one grandparent living in a country you can represent that country in the Olympics. Many athletes that could not make the US team went on to compete for other countries. As example the women's softball team representing Mexico only had one person from Mexico on the roster. All the others were from the USA.

And going to toss out this opinion. The reason China does so well in diving and weight lifting is because they are so short. They lift the weights a shorter distance than others and it is easier to spin when you are short and can become more compact.

The horse events always seemed odd to me, it feels like the horse deserves the bulk of the credit.

Equestrian cultural appropriation!

I wasn't saying beach volleyball isn't a sport or anything like that. It just sits in that gray area of being a team sport. Sports that have a duo competing sometimes do not get a team sport designation.

I had to go look it up because I was curious. Horses get a ribbon for winning the Olympics instead of a medal. It is pinned to the bridle.
