After a year of speculation over a brewing mental health crisis among kids and adolescents, in June the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finally released data showing that starting in February of 2021, the number of suspected suicide attempts had dramatically increased among girls ages 12-17 in the United States as compared to 2019. You could almost hear a collective, we told you so, from pundits who had spent the year decrying the closure of schools as Covid-19 tore through the country. To them, these statistics were proof positive that closing schools had brutalized kids.

Here’s the snag: the rate of suicide attempts appears to have been inversely related to school closures. That is, when schools closed, suspected suicide attempts actually decreased. When schools reopened, suspected suicide attempts skyrocketed in lockstep.

More like kids are assholes to each other and bullying causes deaths. But this is a made up theory and likely bullshit just like your bullshit theory.

Education is lethal to your financial and mental health. That's why my kids are home schooled. My 7-year-old is probably more financially independent than most adults in this forum already. I've paid his allowance into a portfolio that he manages (well over 5 figures at this point).

Embarrassingly enough, his portfolio has outperformed mine (and way outperformed the market), because his decision making process is "Roblox is awesome I want Roblox stock. Oh and YouTube rock, I'll have some Google stock too".

They don't teach this is schools for a reason. He's already well on his way to financial freedom by age 18 simply on investing his allowance. But, should things go awry, he also knows how to code. Yes, 7-year-olds can code, it's simply a matter of exposing them to progressive logic at a young age. Coding isn't actually as hard as people think, it's more of a comfort level thing.

But Dukhat wants to make sure his progeny (theoretically, of course) get a 20 on the ACT and go massively in debt going to "good" college.

lol, such a different world

When did you start teaching him to code and how?

It’s a language right, and kids are good at learning new languages :)

As soon as he could type, around 6 years old. He knows basic Python coding now and uses it for math and such. But early on I was always exposing him to logic in many ways. Such as the Osmo system, teaching him Chess, and a whole bunch of other random things. Basically, whenever I saw something that could build his logical skills, I was happy to give it a shot. Osmo and chess were the most recent ones. But there were some iPad apps and other programs that I forget at this point.

I know burgeoning friendship must be an entirely foreign concept to you, so it's no surprise that you see Nim as my "disciple", considering how much of a hard-on you apparently have for me.

You're welcome to join the crew, if you'd like. Just be polite.

Thanks for that tip, I have been looking for a soft introduction, that osmo game looks perfect. I think I heard of it or something of that sort years ago.

So kods are pressuring other kids to suicide? Simple answer, get rid of the kids.

What we do is get a bunch child killers, hire them as janitors, then burn them in the boiler room and let them have claw fingers.

I’ve homeschooled my kids for years because our education system teaches you how to be a wage slave and not much else. Before homeschool they were in a private Montessori school.

heh, my kids went to a Waldorf school. Aka Pro Montisori (montesori is what schools become here if they can't get the R. Steiner educators).

I love Waldorf schools. That was my first choice but they have a long waiting list here and a Montessori popped up first.

Billionaires are a dime a dozen.

I'm a level 7 Demo-God who invented the circle.

My kids will only go to the most exclusive Trump schools, nonasians allowed.

I would seriously recommend looking into Waldorf if your child(ren) attend school. I don't know how the public school system is over there in Sweden, but Waldorf is far and away the best method of pedagogy.

jergul

How have your kids taken to it?

My shit statistics made my networth 10 figures. What job do you work again where you still don't make 6 figures after 10 years on the job?

Nah, 2 are in regular highschool now (we follow the German model with Gymnas the last 3 years and the nearest waldof gymnas is 1500 km away). I just glanced at my desk as you asked. They have some pretty advanced doodles strewn about. Hence my answer.

As a parent the single most effective way I can influence my child is to choose the environment he grows up in, school is a huge part of that. Even without the specific pedagogy, to just be surrounded by other children who come from such families where the parents thought about these things, that alone is immensely valuable.

I have been looking into this stuff, thanks for having me in mind :)

The public schools in Sweden vary A LOT from municipality to municipality. Some schools are terrible and these schools are usually highly segregated and often full of new arrivals. A terrible idea btw.

When I came to Sweden we were 2 immigrant (Iranians) in a class of 18. We eventually topped out at 3 adding a Bosniak. I think we were like 30 Iranian kids of varying ages in this small town. As far as I have been able to keep track of these people, we all went on to be relatively successful, highly integrated or assimilated. No one went to become a career criminal or some other kind of scumbag. Sure, most of these families were of middle class mindset or higher from the get go with a sort of cultural background that made this transition easier, but the environment we grew up in left a huge mark on me*. My parents found their first Swedish friends with the parents of my first Swedish friend in 1st grade. It was their first entry into Swedish society that was not the government. Long before they got jobs they had gotten a feel for Swedes and their culture and sorted it all out.

*Such that we now live in a small town like the one I grew up in.
