Sarah Huckabee Sanders after deadly storms swept through parts of the state in mid-March, killing three people and injuring 32 others. In a letter written to Trump on behalf of the state, the six-member delegation expressed support of Sanders' request that the federal government reconsider her major disaster declaration for individual assistance and urged the president to approve her request for a major disaster declaration for public assistance in response to the severe storms and tornadoes of March 14 and March 15. The letter comes after the Federal Emergency Management Agency had rejected Sanders' requests. "As Governor Sanders noted in her request, these storms caused catastrophic damage across the state, resulting in disastrous amounts of debris, widespread destruction to homes and businesses, the deaths of three Arkansans, and injuries to many more," the letter states. "Less than three weeks later, Arkansas again faced catastrophic weather that brought severe storms, tornadoes, and a generational flood event. Sadly, these compounding disasters impacted many of the same counties, adding more catastrophic debris and causing the loss of three more Arkansans. Given the cumulative impact and sheer magnitude of destruction from these severe weather events, federal assistance is vital to ensure that state and local communities have the capabilities needed to rebuild." According to the delegation, 456 structures were affected, with 156 destroyed and 93 categorized as "major." Preliminary damage assessments for public assistance for the requested counties estimate the damage of the storms to be nearly $8.8 million. The letter also urges the federal government to approve a 30-day extension of time for Sanders' administration to submit a request for major disaster declaration for severe weather that began April 2. A total of 63 of the state's 75 counties reported damage due to that weather, which included tornadoes and "generational flooding." The letter states that "due to the scale of the event, non-receded floodwaters, and the phased timing of the (preliminary damage assessments), the state needs additional time to complete its analysis and documentation." "The entire Arkansas delegation is eager to assist in any way possible to ensure the expedited evaluation of these requests," the letter states. Arkansas' all-Republican congressional delegation consists of Sens. John Boozman of Rogers and Tom Cotton of Little Rock, and Reps. Rick Crawford of Jonesboro, Steve Womack of Rogers, French Hill of Little Rock and Bruce Westerman of Hot Springs. http://www...nal-delegation-urges-trump-to/ |

According to FEMA officials, the federal disaster relief has been made available to the state to supplement response efforts due to the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that began on April 2 and has continued into the weekend. Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Saturday requested a major disaster declaration from President Trump just ahead of the storms FEMA is now authorized to coordinate relief efforts caused by the emergency and to aid Arkansans who have been affected. In a release from FEMA, officials said they will alleviate impacted areas as necessary. Officials say the emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance under the public assistance program, will be provided at 75% federal funding. The assistance is available statewide for all the counties impacted by the storms. http://www...rkansas-emergency-declaration/ |
