Yeah, it used to be that way here too.

Leaving your car unlocked and even leaving the keys used to be common. It was also common for people to go to bed with their windows open and their doors unlocked without worrying about anyone breaking in.

I don't know if it was ever like that in NYC, but it was like that in most places.

Blame the proliferation of narcotics and soft-on- crime policies. Also mass media, which has made people more aware/frightened of crime.
