I rmemeber when Republicans opposed the federalization of state elections, with regards to the VRA, For the People Act, John Lewis Act, etc.

Republicans do have a good argument for voter ID - it's a no-brainer measure and the public overwhelmingly supports it. But as usual, Trump has twisted the issue in the worst manner possible, sounding like a Democrat in wanting to nationalize elections, and all because he still thinks he won in 2020. Bad.

Why are democrats so insistent on not checking id for voting I wonder?

Because it acts as voter suppression in the US. That is why. The problem the republicans are trying to fix is democratic voters voting.

Actual fraudulent votes are not a problem. Goodness knows you have tried to find examples of that hapening.
