rank | Mon Feb 09 14:04:42 SpaceX prioritizes lunar 'self-growing city' over Mars project, Musk says Elon Musk said on Sunday that SpaceX has shifted its focus to building a "self‑growing city" on the moon, which could be achieved in less than 10 years. SpaceX still intends to start on Musk's long-held ambition of a city on Mars within five to seven years, he wrote on his X social media platform, "but the overriding priority is securing the future of civilization and the Moon is faster." Musk's comments echo a Wall Street Journal report on Friday, stating that SpaceX has told investors it would prioritize going to the moon and attempt a trip to Mars at a later time, targeting March 2027 for an uncrewed lunar landing. As recently as last year, Musk said that he aimed to send an uncrewed mission to Mars by the end of 2026. The U.S. faces intense competition from China in the race to return humans to the moon this decade. Humans have not visited the lunar surface since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Less than a week ago, Musk announced that SpaceX acquired the artificial intelligence company he also leads, xAI, in a deal that values the rocket and satellite company at $1 trillion and the artificial intelligence outfit at $250 billion. Proponents of the move view it as a way for SpaceX to bolster its plans for space-based data centers, which Musk sees as more energy efficient than terrestrial facilities as the demand for compute power soars with AI development. SpaceX is hoping a public offering later this year could raise as much as $50 billion, which could make it the largest public offering in history. On Monday, Musk said in response to a user on X that NASA will constitute less than 5% of SpaceX's revenue this year. SpaceX is a core contractor in NASA's Artemis moon program with a $4 billion contract to land astronauts on the lunar surface using Starship. "Vast majority of SpaceX revenue is the commercial Starlink system," Musk added. Earlier on Sunday, Musk shared the company's first Super Bowl ad, promoting its Starlink Wi-Fi service. Even as Musk reorients SpaceX, he is also pushing his publicly traded company, Tesla, in a new direction. After virtually building the global electric vehicles market, Tesla is now planning to spend $20 billion this year as part of an effort to pivot to autonomous driving and robots. To speed up the shift, Musk said last month Tesla is ending production of two car models at its California factory to make room for manufacturing its Optimus humanoid robots. https://ww...-growing-city-moon-2026-02-08/ |

rank | Tue Feb 10 01:20:27 My favorite part ... “For those unaware, SpaceX has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take 20+ years,” Musk wrote, in part. 20+ years for Mars? Really? I could have sworn that was right around the corner and just over the next hill. Full of shit 24/7/365 - |

rank | Tue Feb 10 01:51:28 Ive long argued we need a moon base. You can bitxh and moan about the time frame, but he is clearly building the foundation for further colonising space. 1. SpaceX 2. AI 3. Robots 4. Boring company 5. Tesla/solar All comes together to start a self building city on the moon/mars. |

rank | Tue Feb 10 02:30:59 There is no foundation. There will be no colonizing of space. The human body has evolved to live in this little bubble and nowhere else in the universe. The expense to even play at space colonization is ... if you'll pardon the pun ... astronomical. It makes no sense for humans to spend trillions of dollars building space infrastructure to then genetically modify humans into something other than human so they can survive on other worlds. We may as well just set all of our money on fire. And that's before we even get to the new species deciding to genocide us so we can't compete for resources with them. - |

rank | Tue Feb 10 02:45:41 Hababe The lifeboat fallacy is a contradiction. Anyone leaving earth to save humanity from extinction events on earth will obvously need to eliminate the greatest threat to the lifeboat itself. Namely humanity remaining behind. And what is the moral cost if the fallacy is that humans on earth are doomed anyway, so why does the timing and method of earth extinction matter? |

rank | Tue Feb 10 03:31:19 Jergul you are both really bad at math and at morality. Anyway. From building a base point of view the moon is obviously better since you chop off all the flight time and get a bit cheaper delta v budget. Still would have liked to see humans on mars first, just to do it. |

Yeah, Seb has made the same point too. The moment there's a civilization on Mars, Mars, the asteroid belt, and anything further out becomes their dominion and not ours. Literally the last thing we want is a civilization on Mars. - |

rank | Tue Feb 10 03:44:47 "Still would have liked to see humans on mars first, just to do it." All that takes is volunteers and a government willing to authorize launching a one way voyage. Or I suppose you could launch from international waters. We can 100% get humans from here to there. - |
