rank | Tue Mar 24 16:54:46 American Dennis Coyle freed by Taliban after yearlong detention in Afghanistan Authorities in Afghanistan announced on Tuesday morning that they have released American academic Dennis Coyle after holding him for over a year, according to Afghanistan's Taliban-run foreign ministry. Coyle's release came on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the ministry said. "Based on the request, a plea had been made for his release. The esteemed authority of the Supreme Court deemed his prior imprisonment sufficient, and today he was handed over to his family in Kabul," a statement read. State Secretary Marco Rubio said on social media that he met earlier this month with Coyl's siblings after they asked for help freeing their brother. He thanked the UAE and Qatar for their support. "The release is a positive step towards ending the practice of hostage diplomacy," Rubio wrote on X. Coyle was detained in January 2025 on allegations he violated laws, although Afghan authorities never publicly stated what laws he was accused of having violated. Earlier this month, the U.S State Department named Afghanistan a state sponsor of wrongful detention and accused the Taliban of kidnapping people for ransom or to seek policy concessions. Rubio also called for the release of "Mahmood Habibi and all Americans unjustly detained in Afghanistan." Mahmood Habibi, an Afghan American businessman who worked as a contractor for a Kabul-based telecommunications company, disappeared in August 2022. The State Department announced a $5 million reward for any information on his whereabouts. Afghanistan’s government rejected U.S. allegations that it detains foreigners to obtain leverage over other countries, saying Afghan authorities arrest people for violating laws not to make a deal. https://ba...tention-state-department-rubio |

murder
rank | Tue Mar 24 16:58:36 This reminds me of that time I left my house on the way to Costco and I got turned around and ended up in North Korea. It was totally innocent, but these regimes are really paranoid. They think if an American ends up in their country, that they must be CIA. Crazy, right? - |
