The talks are progressing amid skyrocketing energy prices sparked by the US-Israeli attack on Iran and the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz to Washington and its allies, through which at least 20 percent of the world's oil and natural gas typically transits. According to sources speaking with Reuters, a “verbal agreement” to negotiate an LNG deal was reached during a 19 March meeting in New Delhi between Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin and Indian Petroleum and Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The two energy ministers also agreed to double Russian crude oil sales to India, three people familiar with the talks said. If the deal is implemented, India's imports of Russian crude would increase from 20 percent of total imports to 40 percent. |
