Well, the US ain't what it was in 1990.

No denying the rise of China as a major player.

The EU forged out of neccesity to be a player on the world stage.

Others....

China has absolutely taken the lead in raw manufacturing ability...they still have a brand though that isn't trusted for quality...falling behind in the space race, gaining influence, population shrinking and ageing RAPIDLY.

US, still makes money, still leads in military, business and high end manufacturing, tech, Space, failing on infrastructure, many other metrics, sliding back towards dystopian robber barrons.

EU-Nice place to live, has very little pull internationally, 2nd rate world power but still known for high quality manufacturing, food, high standards of living, good side kick on things like space and R&D

Ya pretty much. Russia India and brazil are worthless.

Japan and Korea aged themselves into oblivion.

What high end manufacture are you talking about that the US is leading in?
Sam Adams

Fri Jun 05 08:17:09
Rockets + satellites
Airplanes - Europe can almost keep up.
Weapons - by far
Computer chips
Medical devices
Medicine - by far
Oil equipment

Things the US is tied for
Cars - China will probably pull away soon
Ships
Robots- China may pull away
Food and alcohol

Things the US clearly does not have the lead in
Solar panels
3d printers
Batteries
Consumer electronics
Ski equipment
Pretty much all low tech items... China dominates here.

Here's a better question?

What manufacturing does Europe lead in.

Aircraft correct
Cars - China produces 3 times more cars
Rockets and sats - correct
Weapons - Handguns yes. The rest no. Not close.
Medical devices - yes.
Medicine - yes (not by far)
Oil production equipment.
Computer chips. Not even close. 15% max.

We will have to talk about space toasters (starlink on degradable orbits) in a few years.

China produces more cars.... but it's missing nuance.

There are good reasons why BYD is worth a fraction of Tesla. Pretty sure they still dont turn a profit on selling cars.

Then we have the landwind...which epitomizes Chinese manufacturing....it looks good on the outside, but there are reasons it is so much cheaper than what it looks like.

Here's a comprehensive breakdown of where the US stands in chip manufacturing — its real advantages, structural weaknesses, and the strategic picture:
Where the US genuinely dominates
The US advantage isn't primarily in making chips — it's in designing them and controlling the tools others use to design them.
Chip design & IP: American companies — Nvidia, AMD, Apple, Qualcomm, Intel — design the world's most advanced chips. US-based chip companies are shaping the roadmap for the next generation of computing, driven by decades of R&D investment and a strong startup ecosystem. (Cubefabs)
EDA software (the design toolchain): This is arguably the most powerful chokepoint. Modern chips can fit tens of billions of transistors per square inch, and the software enabling designers to create those blueprints — Electronic Design Automation (EDA) — is dominated by three US-headquartered companies: Synopsys, Cadence, and Mentor Graphics/Siemens EDA. (Center for Strategic and International Studies) Over 70% of China's EDA market is controlled by US firms, built on decades of R&D — and Chinese alternatives lack the precision and scalability needed for advanced chips, giving US companies a multi-year lead. (Ainvest)
Export controls as strategic leverage: US and allied companies have dominant control over the most advanced parts of the global chip supply chain, allowing export restrictions to potentially block Chinese companies from accessing critical goods — not just chips themselves, but equipment, machinery, and software required to produce them domestically. (Effective Altruism Forum) This played out in real time in 2025: when the US imposed EDA export restrictions in May 2025, China retaliated by tightening licensing on rare earth minerals, which it controls for over 90% of global processing capacity — forcing a reversal within six weeks. (Sourceability)
Where the US is still catching up: physical manufacturing
Despite billions invested to bring advanced semiconductor manufacturing onshore, the US still faces a major dependency on other countries for back-end packaging — the factories that turn processed silicon wafers into finished chips. (Harvard Business Review)
A new fab in the US costs approximately 30% more to build and operate over 10 years than one in Taiwan, South Korea, or Singapore, and 37–50% more than one in China (Semiconductor Industry Association) — driven by labor costs, construction premiums, and scarce engineering talent.
The TSMC Arizona fab is a landmark investment, but Silicon Valley has historically depended on Taiwan to supply roughly 90% of advanced chips, and national security experts have warned that a total loss of Taiwanese supply could cause an 11% plunge in US economic output. (Technetbook)
The AI chip moment
Deloitte estimates the AI chip market in 2026 will reach approximately $500 billion (Deloitte Insights) , driven upward sharply by AI demand. The US — led by Nvidia — is positioned to capture the bulk of that market through design dominance, but physical production still flows heavily through Taiwan.
Bottom line: The US holds an almost unassailable lead in chip design, design software, and IP — the highest-margin, highest-leverage layers of the stack. Physical manufacturing is the vulnerability being addressed through the CHIPS Act and TSMC Arizona, but it'll take years and remains structurally more expensive than Asia. The real economic weapon is the EDA/software chokehold, which is why the US-China chip war keeps gravitating back to those tools.

Extremely volatile and unpredictable Maga times means its much harder to predict than this, and this is not one of the most likely scenarios, though one of the more rose-tinted ones from a US perspective

The one thing there is no doubt about is that China is taking top place in the next decade, whether alongside any other powers or alone remains to be seen.

Also, this nonsense about them producing cheap knock-offs - didnt you learn from Japan, South Korea etc when they went through a rapid period of producing cheap knock-offs that we all laughed at until they were leading quality leaders at competitive prices just a few years later, while the West was wiping the smirk off its face?

Actually, I'd probably have to give infrastructure to the Euros.

China has built alot, and some is good. But with so many tofu dreg projects.

Even the stuff they build in other countries, so, not built for GDP goals.

China built the hongqi bridge, large fancy bridge...collapsed after 7 months.

Im not claiming the US infrastructure is good by any means. I frequently complain about it and our lack of investment into it.

That said the more I think about it, western EU is pretty hard to say they don't have better infrastructure.

I would say China probably beats the US on infrastructure, even in my OP I admit US Inf is un maintained.
Habebe

Fri Jun 05 18:32:03
I was the one arguing that we should pull money from the military into INF.

.5 trillion more yearly into the military?

Imagine what that could do for INF.
