another Harambe:

A critically endangered Malayan tiger named Eko was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy Wednesday after a man was attacked by the animal at a zoo in Naples, Florida, officials said.
The man, who is in his 20s, was seriously injured when he entered an unauthorized area of the tiger enclosure at the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens and began either petting or feeding the tiger, the Collier County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.

The attack happened after the zoo had closed for the day. The man was part of a third-party cleaning service contracted by the zoo to clean restrooms and the gift shop, not the animal enclosure, the sheriff's office noted.
The tiger grabbed the man's arm and pulled it into the enclosure after he crossed "an initial fence barrier and put his arm through the fencing of the tiger enclosure," the sheriff's office statement said.

The first deputy to respond kicked the enclosure and attempted to get the tiger to release the man's arm, but the deputy "was forced to shoot the tiger," the sheriff's office said.

why would you value a human over a critically endangered animal

For real! It would be different if the kitty had escaped and was a general threat, but here? This was whipping boy logic (punishing the wrong person). The man had made his choice at that point. It was time to respect nature without intervention. Either the man wins or the tiger wins. Incidentally, the tiger was definitely winning. ;D
(IRL, imagine hearing that when "help" arrives: "Hey.. yeah.. we're not allowed to help. You have to defeat this animal without physical assistance. Maybe go for the eyes? Good luck.") XD

Also, looking at the bodycam footage..:
(Not censored; shredded-arm gore-warning; also, careful with audio because this encoder re-maxes the volume if you pause and resume)
http://www...ident-122921/1053991321842830/
..the man and tiger were at an impasse between a fence... so.. while I wouldn't normally think that shooting to wound or warning shots would be options.. it seems a lot like the officer could have made those choices in this situation. The tiger was not giving up its grip, but it was mostly stationary. Shooting it in the paw might have worked. Not that I hold it against the officer. The fence-jumper-man was screaming in pain and was communicating that he was in mortal danger, and the kitty cat had just re-clenched its teeth and was trying for another pull.
Poor kitty. :(

Kind of funny: at 8:55 in the video you can see the officer removing his shirt-stay from his sock, since it popped off his shirt and had fallen down his pant leg. Lulz. Pro-gamer move: if you have to wear shirt stays, it's better to just have dedicated shirts and socks that have had shirt-stay connections sewn into connection points, that way you're not relying on the little metal clamps. I don't know how no one has marketed this yet. Incidentally, these little alterations tend to end up on the market eventually. If alterations places find themselves doing this work repeatedly, it's eventually picked up by uniform suppliers and becomes normal...

Last comment! Petting a big kitty at night?? Bad idea! Geeze :D
You might be able to get away with petting a well-fed kitty during the day, but kitty cats go into hunt mode at night. I hope the man got a few chin skritches in before finding this out, though ;p

CES 2022 starts January 5th (Wednesday) and goes to January 7th. They'll have it in-person in Las Vegas, so it should be pretty cool. The Bolshevik and virtue-signalling brands have started pulling attendance for a digital-only appearance, but lots of vendors have stayed on schedule.

I'm especially looking forward to LG's January 4th [potential/rumored] pre-floor announcement of a 42" OLED 4k monitor that has a high refresh rate (hopefully at least maintaining 120 Hz, just to stay respectable). They were supposed to announce it for CES 2021, but pandemic supply shortages and such got everyone to delay products. AMD still hasn't even released their new Zen3 Threadrippers for purchase (normal target would have been Summer 2021), so 2022 should be very cool for electronics...

A great example of classical Finnish humor:
- dry
- meta
- appears serious
- self-ironic
- an attempt to do a thing right, to avoid a possible embarrassing situation, while in fact creating another, even more embarrassing situation (I'd say the majority of Finnish humor is one or another way based on embarrassment and especially second-hand embarrassment)
- you're still wondering if they were serious or joking

University of Alaska researchers have discovered that hamsters are the heavyweights of the animal kingdom when it comes to handling their hooch.

...these hairy drinkers can imbibe 18 grams per kilogram of body weight a day, the Atlantic reported on Sunday. That’s the equivalent of a human downing a liter and a half of 95% alcohol.

...

To gauge how much tipple it takes to get a hamster tipsy, the researcher and her team fed dwarf hamsters alcohol and rated their inebriation levels using a wobble scale, per the findings published in the journal Behavioral Processes in 2015. Scores ranged from zero, aka no wobbling, to four, indicating they fell over and didn’t get back up.

They found that the rodents never averaged above 0.5 on the wobbling scale, even when imbibing the highest oral concentrations possible. They chalked up the phenomenon to the fact that hamster livers process alcohol so efficiently that only small traces end up in their bloodstream.

In fact, when the researchers injected the animals with the same or lower doses, they wobbled and fell over — as the alcohol had bypassed their booze-processing organ and went directly into their blood.

Two Clearwater, Florida, women are facing felony charges of burglary with assault or battery after throwing glitter on a man during an argument, according to local reports.

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office records show Sarah Franks, 29, and Kaitlin O'Donovan, 27, were arrested Monday on burglary charges and held on $75,000 bond. They have since been released.

The two women were accused of showing up to the victim's apartment on Monday around 3 a.m., at which point they began to argue with him from his ground-level patio, FOX 13 reported, citing an arrest affidavit.

At that point, Franks and O'Donovan allegedly threw a container of glitter at the victim, hitting his head and torso. Investigators said Franks then jumped over a fence onto the victim's patio and threw more containers of glitter at him.

O'Donovan, meanwhile, reportedly walked to the front door of the apartment so that Franks could let her in, and they threw more glitter at the man. Franks is also accused of kicking and breaking a lower window in the victim's apartment, according to FOX 13.

Investigators tracked down their car, which the two women drove to their own apartment, and noted glitter inside the vehicle.

Pausing at the question part... to fulfill the conditions, I guess it would make sense to pay the next pirate in line the second most money, then pay the next pirate in line a good amount or the same.
So pay Bart a lot, and
Pay Charlotte the next most amount.
Pay no one else anything, since he only needs three votes, including his own.
So,
himself, 34 coins,
Bart, 33 coins,
Charlotte, 33 coins.
*un-pauses*

Oh, neat. I would not think that would work in a social situation, but okay. I must have under-emphasized the "perfectly logical" part ;D
It seems like paying 1 coin for two other votes would be seen as unfair, so people would take their chances with the next distribution. By paying Bart and Charlotte 33 coins, he would be assured their vote (the maximum amount of bribery available to him while being paid the most), whereas 1 coin to Charlotte and Eliza might make them take their chances. I see why that works in autistic-land, though... Eliza would rather have 1 coin than zero coins and so on from there ;p
I'm liking the comments pointing out that Game Theory doesn't map onto real life very well ;D

pretty fun little game: Vampire Survivors

the first game i've bought not on sale in years... as it was $3...

you just move around sparse environments as monsters continuously come at you... all your weapon powers auto trigger on cooldowns, so no attacking really other than positioning yourself to best utilize your powers (your char starts w/ one power, and you learn new ones & upgrade old ones as you level up or get chests from bosses)

more fun than that sounds :p

garlic+lightning+cross(boomerang)+santa water worked really nice on Library map... as have other combos... Library seems easier than the barren grass map

you can spend coins on upgrades for future runs (coins mostly come from chests off bosses)

note: price goes up w/ each purchase by a %... which means the order you buy them matters... buy expensive ones first (thankfully, there's a full free refund any time you want, so you can reorder to see if you do better) "Greed" seems obvious best choice to focus on at start (gives more coins)

you also unlock stuff thru achievements

Chinese fans of David Fincher's cult classic were enraged over the weekend when they noticed a version of the movie available on popular Chinese streaming platform Tencent Video completely removes its iconic ending.

The finale of "Fight Club" shocked audiences when the film hit theaters in 1999. In a massive twist, the narrator, played by Edward Norton, realizes that Brad Pitt's slick-talking Tyler Durden character is his imaginary alter ego, and kills him off.
In the final scene, the narrator stands with his girlfriend, played by Helena Bonham Carter, as they watch explosives blow up a cluster of skyscrapers — all part of what was originally presented to the audience as Durden's plan to destroy consumerism by erasing bank and debt records.

That amount of anarchy — and the government's inability to stop it — doesn't appear to have passed muster with China's notoriously strict censorship rules, though.

In the version available on Tencent Video the entire scene featuring the explosions has been cut out. Instead, it has been replaced with a caption explaining to audiences that the authorities arrived just in time to save the day.

"Through the clue provided by Tyler, the police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding," the caption reads. "After the trial, Tyler was sent to [a] lunatic asylum receiving psychological treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012."

A Friday night out turned into a melee in Bensalem at a Golden Corral restaurant. Now police are trying to figure out how it started.

A former employee of the restaurant says he was told the fight may have happened after a customer became enraged when the buffet ran out of steak.

“From what I heard it was over steak, apparently somebody cut in line,” Becker said.

His friend heard the same details.

“There was a shortage of steak and two parties were involved and one family cut in front of another family, they were taking their time and they ran out of steak and it got into a heated exchange at the tables,” Gaven Lauletta said.

"Twilight explained by an idiot"

Lol, that was good :D
The Rifftrax (MST3k) for Twilight was one of their best. Every time there was an awkward pause, one of them would say, "Line?"

I blame the weird acting and scene-work of the first Twilight on director Catherine Hardwicke. I still remember seeing that opening weekend and feeling super cringed-out the entire movie — especially the first "diamonds" in the sun scene. It had a few good moments, though, like the prom dance. It at least got the absurdities of the universe out of the way so that the second could be better :p

..
"Covid Simulator game"

I somehow doubt that they added in variables for governments manipulating statistics to justify the seizing of businesses and consolidating of powers. That's something that movies like "Contagion" forgot to consider. "Outbreak" at least predicted that the government would release the virus and manufacture the solution only when called out on their unwillingness to relinquish a bio-weapon.

Lulz. Reminds me of that crazy person's article (Kim Correa's) I posted near the top of the DayZ thread where Correa felt violated in DayZ in 2014 because she was "robbed" in the game and her robbers joked about having sex with her character's dead body.

It's funny that the distance between people who believe (easily) in simulations and people who took the Matrix lessons of being able to recognize the difference between reality and simulation have already started — even though VR still looks like garbage. Like, the Metaverse looks like it took a step 20 years back in terms of immersion and realism (those stupid 3D models made for a child's cartoon), but people have already started talking about being "violated" by shapes moving into where they perceive their real body to be in relation to their virtual body. These sorts of idiotic perceptions even *before* the "Ready Player One" feedback suits, which themselves were clunky. If there's any constant here, it's that people with weak nervous systems will have a tough time in any context ;D

An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. made an emergency landing Sunday in Kansas City after a passenger attempted to enter the cockpit and open an exit door.

Crew members and other passengers controlled the unruly passenger until he was taken into custody upon landing, The New York Times reported.

American Airlines said that the flight landed safely and was met by law enforcement upon arrival. The airline added that the plane’s crew “handled the circumstances with the utmost skill and professionalism,” the Times reported.

The Hill has reached out to American Airlines for comment.

Mouaz Moustafa, a passenger on the plane, described the scene to the Times. “A flight attendant ran to the back of the plane and got the coffee pot and continues to bash the guy on the head,” Moustafa told the newspaper, adding the man was “bleeding profusely.”

lol. It seemed like a normal story until the clear disconnect between "utmost skill and professionalism" and "got the coffee pot and continues to bash the guy on the head" :D

This reminds me... everyone needs to have a good catch phrase ready just in case they get arrested publicly.. like, an obvious one would be "Epstein didn't kill himself," "Sutter Cane SEES you!" or "The drummer from Def Leppard's only got one arm," but it'd be good to have something unique ready.. like.. "Remember to pick up more tortillas or we can't make quesadillas tonight!!"

Like... no point in building a base because items would just disappear due to server issues, no point in collecting materials for a car because the car might just bug and fly into the sky for no reason... melee was seriously broken.. zombies would teleport behind you (bad collision physics).. render distances would make concealment useless...
Still, though, I got really good, so I liked it a lot. It was pretty wild to be able to survive on one character-life for weeks at a time. It made conflicts more impactful.. Blerg. Anyways :p

"See a reply that isn’t adding to the conversation? Let us know by downvoting.'"

Time for the Imgur dog-piling to begin on Twitter as well. That's how Imgur boosted its echo chamber status; people would dog-pile with downvotes, and Imgur started *hiding* the downvoted comments, meaning that people could shut down opposition arguments both with the point system (which downgrades the comment's visibility to the bottom of the page) and by hiding "bad" comments. With shadow-mutes, people could also mute anyone who disagreed with them, ensuring that only their supporters appeared below their posts. Imgur became even more of an echo chamber than Twitter in this way. Twitter must be hoping for more partisan-control of discourse by rolling out the same features.

I've been thinking about what a good social system would look like in some of these places.. and I think there should be a menu that gets people to flag low-level discourse tactics.. like.. if someone tries to derail with a non sequitur, people could literally flag the post "non sequitur". Those flags would not make the post disappear, but if flagged enough times, the post would start with a series of warnings such as, "This post was flagged for trolling by x people" or "This post was flagged for a non sequitur by x people; this person may be attempting to derail the conversation". Of course, this gets to be like plugging holes in a sinking ship, since this adds extra complexity which could be resolved by just making a regular text-based forum ;p

YouTube may have changed how they do shadow-bans..
I'd known before that they delete comments if someone reports them, and in some cases they implement a 24-hour or 48-hour ban where you can't even post in that comment chain or on that channel, but the new thing:
- If someone reports you, you do not receive any more updates from that thread chain. Your last comment also continues to appear, whereas previously you could find out if you were shadow-banned by refreshing the page and noticing that the comment disappeared (this didn't even require checking in another browser). So it's a kind of way of gas-lighting the shadow-banned person into thinking that they had the last word.

So, either YouTube changed their shadow-banning by now making your last comment appear for you alone (versus disappearing the comment even for you after you leave the page), or maybe different types of comment-reporting have differing effects (YouTube expanded their list; it now includes "misinformation", so maybe that's the culprit?).

Regardless, shadow-banning is one of the dumbest things on the Internet. Especially stupid is that YouTube does not address their system in their help pages, so this has to be pieced together from observing the system. I really wish these sites had a transparent system, though. Especially useful would be having a meter in someone's profile that showed how many times they've reported people versus how many times moderators had flagged them for abusing the report system. I would bet that YouTube has the information on the moderator side, since they would want to be able to prioritize genuine reports versus system abuses. E.g., it would be helpful for them to know that someone only uses the report feature if it's to flag commercial spam, since that trustworthiness would allow more streamlined removal of that spam... Arg :/

Firefox is being pretty shifty... it keeps track of your ~16 pinned or most viewed sites or whatever on the generic 'new tab' page, but keeps sliding in 0 to 2 'sponsored sites' in front causing positioning to change... so if you are used to clicking a certain spot you might instead click a sponsor (which i've done once now... damn you Macy's)

"but keeps sliding in 0 to 2 'sponsored sites' in front causing positioning to change..."

I've noticed that too :/
They got me to click on an ad from a shopping site I'd visited, which shows that they not only allow ads to pop into those slots but will also track browsing habits to tailor those spots. I turned off "sponsored shortcuts" in the settings and haven't had issues since then, but the trust is gone ;)

This Hoof GP video from June 2021 is a little different from normal (in a good way). Instead of shaving hooves, he visits a cheese-cow farm and shows the cheese-maker's process:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-AS8PX0syc
It's especially neat to see the cows in such a sanitary state when it's time for milking. He shows troughs that collect "accidents" while milking (shown at about 2:28–2:34 (on the right) and again at 2:59–3:04), and they show the cheese-maker hosing down accidents as they occur.. but they don't show udder prep or how these cows were cleaned beforehand. I had to go to other videos for that rabbit-hole information ;p

They also changed their logo to the Ukrainian flag and added a button in the header with a Ukrainian flag logo that brings you to a Ukrainian donation site ( http://donate.coreresponse.org/give/393950#!/donation/checkout ). Imgur is no longer just dominated by propaganda by the user-base; it is fully conscious of its role from the designers down.
