Utopia Talk / General Talk / New Forum Rules

The moderators are here to keep the forum community happy and comfortable. If at any time for any reason any of the rules or subsequent enforcement are disagreed upon, please discuss it with us and the rest of the forum. Changes will be made based only on general consensus.

The following can be subject to deletion:

1) Any link to pornographic images. Full nudity is allowed, it just cannot be sexual or pornographic in nature. Child nudity is not acceptable at all. (I realize parents like to take pictures of their naked infants. For the sake of internet predators, please keep them decent.)

2) Spam flooding.

3) Threats against the well-being or life of another member. Actions such as stalking, flaming, trolling, and harrassment will be judged on a person to person basis, but extremely obscene harrassment may be deleted before any further discussion is taken on it for the sake of keeping the peace.

4) Any photos, images or material used without the permission of the forum author/creator. Almost everything that is not considered public domain on the internet is covered by copyright law.

5) Impersonating the name or a variation of the name that could lead to identity confusion of a forum member, if that member objects to it.

6) Posts that the author requests to be deleted MAY be deleted. The moderators have the choice of not complying.

When posting an URL that is tasteless, obscene or inappropriate for the workspace please identify it with NWS (Not Workplace Safe) or NSFW (Not Safe For Work). This is a courtesy to our working members. THERE IS NO NEED TO GET THEM FIRED.

This is considered an adult forum, therefore adult language and adult discussion is ALLOWED and will almost CERTAINLY take place. It will be consistently assumed that minors are not privy to the content here.

i have no objections at this time.

"The following can be subject to deletion:"

"can" is a vital word, imo.

I know that some things may break the rules but for the purposes of a discussion ought to remain. I wanted to allow for that flexibility.

As long as we have Earthpig around to lawyer the rules to hell and back and they pass HIS all-important inspection, I guess I'm okay with them.

lol, thank you. im here to help.

i just said this to Kay on IM, and im gonna say it again here:

The regimes with the LEAST credibility are those with no internal criticism.

for example, may of us have been banned by OMAC for questioning OMAC's shitty policies.

by comparison: i can question policies of HHUGT all to hell and get in flamewars with HHUGT's benevolent dictator and face no consequences.

the same applies here.

hence, the regime that runs HHUGT has at least a modicum of credibility, as does the regime here.

(flow, notice i called you a BENEVOLENT dictator. that is a compliment.)

"at least", of course, leaving the possibility for quite more credibility to quite possibly exist.

think of an 'equal to or greater than' sign.

That word you keep using, dictator, I do not think it means what you think it does.

Dictators generally don't take public opinion polls on every potential change to their "dominion". But ya know, I have a bad habit of throwing facts into conversations that frown upon such things :)

no, the bad ones generally do not.

hence, benevolence!

Nah, none of them do. At least not taking polls then actually doing what the people vote for.

Feel free to name one incident where I've done something other than what the majority wanted me to :)

i called you benevolent BECAUSE you poll people and ask for input and such, and take said input.

plenty of dictatorships do this. i used to live in one - the United Arab Emirates. The leaders of the 7 Emirates are hereditary absolute dictators, but do absolutely whatever the citizens want - the same applies to the 'president'.

the Kingdom of Saud right next door is an example of a non-benevolent dictatorship.

keep in mind i have no problems with a small online community being managed by a benevolent dictator. it is an entirely viable form of e-government, and probably one of the most frequently used forms of management.

it isn't criticism, merely statement of fact.

OMAC's management would be an example of a completely non-benevolent dictatorship.

on a 1-10 benevolence scale, OMAC gets a 2, HHUGT gets a 9 or 10.

lol there is no copyright law saying you cant post pictures of people online.

otherwise president bush and every celbrity in the world would be rich and newspapers wouldnt use photos of anyone.

you think the pararazzi get permission?

Basically, you cannot alter or use another person's material for your own purposes without their permission.

This is not to be confused with providing a link to their website. That's not altering it or using it for yourself.

Since the forum members are actually here and present to object to their own material being used, you cannot use it without their permission.

Their material includes photographs.

I don't see what's so unclear about this, but ignorance of the law is not a defense.

It is not necessary to have a notice of copyright (i.e.: 1997 Jane Doe) for material to be copyright protected. Once something tangible is produced, text, graphics, music, video, etc., it is automatically copyrighted.

When creating a Web page, you CANNOT:

-Put the contents of another person's or organizations web site on your Web page

-Incorporate other people's electronic material, such as e-mail, in your own document, without permission.

-Change the context of or edit someone else's digital correspondence in a way which changes the meaning

Just some examples of why that particular trolling act violated copyright law.

What is protected on the WWW?
The unique underlying design of a Web page and its contents, including:

links
original text
graphics
audio
video
html, vrml, other unique markup language sequences
List of Web sites compiled by an individual or organization
and all other unique elements that make up the original nature of the material.

Honestly even if it wasn't, it wouldn't matter. It'd be deleted for trolling and harrassment.

'2) Spam flooding. '

does this mean spamming the board with threads or does it include spamming a thread? If it does include spamming a thread, do Poison Threads count?

Yes unfortunately I'm going to have to agree. I know that's your shtick, but we're trying to limit the disruption of conversations, especially active ones.
