there's a recent story of some girl in a meme photo who got $500,000 for it as an NFT

NFT is a cryptographic token that gives you the rights to a digital item. Think baseball cards, but it can be applied to anything digital.

And there are sets to these. I own some NFT playing cards that I can use in an online game, and trade. It's a MtG-type game.

There's sets of different art, etc.

As for determining the authenticity, there are ways to verify identity (e.g. using their verified Twitter account) that people often use. The market will value an NFT than can be verified over one that cannot.

Literally the same thing that has happened ever since we transitioned to an agrarian society.

It's a market.

You can't sell someone else's NFT because it's tied to private wallets. You can try to make an NFT on something that isn't your's. And the market will again decide how much that's worth, if anything.

And it's quite easy to show them off. Just link to your NFT in the blockchain and you can show your friends the authenticity signed cryptographically by the creator.

i don't think anyone prints out baseball cards & thinks they have the card (just like you can't print out MtG cards)

but apparently this whole thing makes sense to some group of people, so i'll accept your explanations

People print cards and sell them as genuine all the time. Arguably that’s harder to do with an NFT because of cryptographic signatures.

You can’t print your own NFT as something you own or created unless people trust you. Just like you have to trust the card shop is selling genuine items and the Louis Vuitton vendor is seeking genuine purses.

Literally no different than any collectible market is all that needs to be understood from an economic standpoint.

It’s cool that some people aren’t interested in it.

BTW digital collectibles have been a thing long before NFTs. This is a way to make digital collectibles more valuable and allows people to profit and trade from them instead of having them being tied to an account.

Think TF2 hats, except you can trade them on an open market with no fees distributed to the original distributor.

The irc thing never worked as far as I know. Maybe a few months in the beginning. Closes thing to a chat like that would be discord. Maybe we can persuade the admin of utopia game discord to put up a channel for us in their discord? :)

Adulting is tiring, especially these days. I'm still in UK, still in web dev but on the management side. Doing well, invested in what I do, but work is work, ya know? Ran my first 10k this week and recently applied for citizenship (yay, I guess…). Stuff.

Congrats on both the citizenship (I guess?) and the 10k!

I'm in a similar boat. Engineering lead at a $100 billion dollar company. I miss coding full time but that's the gig. Gotta branch out to move up. It's okay though. I get to mentor younger colleagues and see them grow.

Yeah, this is what I'm about. Engineering manager, starting at a new place tomorrow, actually! I miss dev, but I'd miss the "growing others" part more.

Freenode is just an IRC server, the biggest one at least for open source teams.
